Alright, so I needed to figure out how much booze was gonna cost me up in Washington state. You know, with all those extra taxes they slap on. The Search Begins
I started by just hitting up the usual search engines. I typed in things like “Washington state alcohol tax calculator,” “WA liquor tax,” stuff like that. I figured there’d be a bunch of websites offering tools to do the math for me.
I found some official-looking state websites, but honestly, they were kinda dense. Lots of legal jargon and tables, and I just wanted something simple. I don’t wanna be reading a textbook to find out how much that bottle of wine is really gonna cost me.
Digging Deeper
I kept scrolling, skipping past anything that looked too complicated. Then found a webside that said about alcohol tax. it looks not that professional, but I still went through it.
My “Aha!” Moment (sort of)
I realized the tax rates are not simple. I get the number, then I start to calculate it myself.
Doing the Math (ugh)
So, I decided to test it out.
- First, Get the price that showed on the tag.
- Second, Use the state sales tax rate(6.5%) to plus it.
- Then, check the tax rate of Liters of Spirituous Liquor(which is $3.522 per liter).
- And, check the tax rate of Spirituous liquor sold (which is 20.5%).
- Time to calculate them all.
Final Thoughts
I’ve got a workable number. It’s good enough to give me a ballpark figure when I’m at the store, which is really all I wanted. I’m not gonna be calculating pennies, but at least I won’t be shocked at the checkout anymore!
