Okay, so, Leavenworth Blackbird Island. I’d heard whispers about this place, a supposed haven for birdwatchers, especially for spotting, well, blackbirds. I decided I had to check it out.

First thing I did was some digging online. Found some basic info – where it was, roughly what to expect. Seemed straightforward enough. Then I packed my gear: binoculars, my trusty old bird guide (a bit battered, but it’s seen me through!), water, snacks, and a notebook to jot down my sightings.

The drive there was… uneventful. Mostly highways, then some winding roads as I got closer to Leavenworth. Once I arrived, I looked for a parking spot. And the I started walking toward a popular spot, that’s where my friend told me.

My Birdwatching Journey

The island itself? Beautiful! Really peaceful, with trails winding through trees and along the water. I started exploring, keeping my eyes peeled and my ears open. At first, not much. Some robins, a few sparrows – the usual suspects. I kept walking, notebook, try to record the birds I saw and the details.

Then, after about an hour, I hit the jackpot. A whole flock of red-winged blackbirds! They were perched in the reeds, their red epaulets flashing in the sunlight. It was amazing! I spent a good chunk of time just watching them, taking notes on their behavior, their calls… everything.

  • The male Red-winged Blackbirds are hard to mistake.
  • They’re an inky black with red-and-yellow shoulder badges.
  • Females, look, streaky and dark brown.

I even saw a few other blackbird species – Brewer’s blackbirds, and I think a couple of yellow-headed blackbirds, but they were a bit further away, so I couldn’t be 100% sure. I also spotted some other cool birds: a kingfisher diving for fish, a couple of herons wading in the shallows, and even a bald eagle soaring way up high. My friend told me there are even a few Great Horned Owls, but I think I will try next time.

As the sun started to set,I hiked back my car. Feeling pretty satisfied. Leavenworth Blackbird Island? Definitely lived up to the hype. I need to come back again, and probably will soon!
