Okay, so I’ve been itching to get in on the Louisiana shrimp season next year, 2025. I mean, who doesn’t love fresh, wild-caught shrimp? So I started digging around to get myself ready. Here’s how it went down, step by step.
Getting Started: The Research Phase
First thing I did? Hit the internet, of course. I needed to figure out the basics. I needed answers for some basic questions like:

- When exactly does the season usually open and close?
- What kind of gear do I even need?
- Are there any specific rules or licenses I need to worry about?
I spent a good few hours just reading through different websites, forums, and even some official-looking government pages. It was a bit of a mess at first, honestly. Lots of information but some were outdated.
Figuring Out the Timing
The opening dates can change every year, it depends on how the shrimp populations are doing, the weather.
The inshore shrimping is the one I’m after, because I don’t have a huge boat or anything. It is opened by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission.
Gear and Rules
Then came figuring out the gear. I needed to be sure that I am fully equiped.
Turns out, there are rules about the size of the nets you can use, and you definitely need a recreational fishing license.
I also learned there are some areas that are off-limits, to protect the shrimp and other wildlife.

Talking to People Who Know
After all the online stuff, I figured it was time to talk to some real people. I went down to a local bait shop near the coast. Chatting with the guys there was super helpful. I got some good recommendations, and they even gave me some tips on good spots to try when the season finally opens.
I also found a couple of online forums where people were talking about shrimping in Louisiana. Reading through their posts, seeing their pictures, that got me even more excited.
Making a Plan
So, now I’ve got a pretty good idea of what I need to do. I’m going to:
- Keep an eye on the official announcements for the 2025 season dates.
- Get my license sorted out well in advance.
- Buy a suitable net.
- Double-check all the rules and regulations before I head out.
I’m feeling pretty good about it. It’s going to be a bit of a learning curve, but I’m excited to give it a shot. Fresh shrimp, here I come… hopefully!
