Horns Basketball Play: Easy Guide & Top Tips for Success

Alright, so I wanted to try out this “Horns” basketball play I’d seen online. I’m no pro, just a guy who likes to shoot some hoops, so I figured I’d give it a shot and see how it goes.

First thing I did was watch a bunch of videos about it. I needed to get the basic idea down, you know? It looked pretty simple, with two guys up high near the free-throw line, and then some action down low.

Getting Started

  • Finding some friends: This was the first hurdle. Needed at least four other guys to make it work. Texted some buddies, rounded up a crew, and we hit the local court.

We walked through it a few times. Just to get a feel. The two “bigs” set up at the elbows, me at the top with the ball, and the other two guys in the corners.

The Messy Middle

  • First try: Total disaster. I passed to one of the guys up top, he tried to hand it off, and… turnover. We were all stepping on each other’s toes.
  • Second try: A little better. We got the first pass off, but the timing was way off. The defense just swarmed us.
  • Lots of practice: So We kept trying, kept messing up, and kept adjusting. We figured we get the pass done, and hand off smoothly

Finally Figuring It Out(kind of)

After about an hour of this, we started to see some glimmers of hope. We actually ran the play a few times and got some decent looks at the basket.

  • Success! (sort of): I managed to hit a couple of shots coming off the screen. It felt pretty good, even though it wasn’t super smooth.
  • We start to do a screen and roll, handoff and passing.

It’s definitely not as easy as it looks on those pro highlight reels. But, hey, it was fun trying something new. I think with some more practice, we could actually make this “Horns” thing work for us. We just need to keep at it, work on the timing, and maybe, just maybe, we’ll look like we know what we’re doing out there.
