Choosing a Bird House and Feeder: What Works and What Doesnt

Okay, here’s my blog post about building a bird house and feeder:

So, I’ve always wanted to attract more birds to my backyard. I love watching them, and I figured a good way to do that was to build a bird house and a feeder. I’m no carpenter, but I figured, how hard could it be, right? Famous last words, maybe, but it turned out pretty well!

Getting Started

First, I gathered some scrap wood I had lying around. It wasn’t pretty, but it was free! I also picked up some basic tools – a hammer, nails, a saw, and some sandpaper. I didn’t want to invest too much in case this whole project went south.

Building the Bird House

I started with the bird house. I found some simple plans online – basically a box with a hole. I measured and cut the wood, which was probably the hardest part. My cuts weren’t exactly straight, but I figured the birds wouldn’t be too picky.

Then, I nailed the pieces together. I definitely hit my thumb a few times. Ouch! It looked a little…rustic…but it was solid. I sanded down the rough edges to make it a bit safer for the birds (and me!).

  • Cut the wood pieces according to the plan.
  • Assemble the sides, bottom, and top.
  • Nail everything together securely.
  • Sand down any sharp edges.
  • Drill an entry hole.

Making the Feeder

The feeder was even easier. I just took a plastic bottle, cut some feeding holes near the bottom, and filled it with birdseed. I used some wire to hang it from a tree branch. Super simple!

Putting It All Together

After all the hard work. I hung the bird house and feeder in my backyard. It looks great!

I placed both the house and the feeder in my backyard, hoping for the best. It took a few days, but finally, the birds started to come! It was so rewarding to see them enjoying the things I had built.

It wasn’t perfect, and it definitely took some effort, but it was a fun project. And now I have a backyard full of happy birds. If I can do it, anyone can!
